The Personal Relationships module supports teenagers in the difficult, consequential decisions they will make about relationships and sex in their young lives. Teenagers seek independence, individuality, and acceptance, and in the face of social pressure and competition, premature and high-risk sexual activity is a reality. Statistics show that nearly four in ten young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20 - nearly one million a year. Over eighty percent of these pregnancies are unintended, seventy-nine percent are to unmarried teens, and forty percent result in abortion.
YLA encourages teenagers to remain abstinent so that they may realize their goals. By focusing on a strong sense of self to use as a compass in making social choices, and by building interpersonal skills to navigate toward mutually respectful and healthy relationships, adolescents become empowered to create a future full of emotional, physical, and intellectual potential.
