According to a recent study, 55 percent of teens between the ages of 16 and 19 do not participate in the work force. While this study was conducted regionally, the statistics are indicative of a perennial problem faced in urban centers all across America.
Where are teens expected to get tips about resume building or writing a cover letter? How will they learn how to find jobs that will help them achieve their long-term career goals? The Job Seeking Module gives them the tools they need to secure the job they want.
Participants create resumes, search job postings on the web and in classified ads, and practice interviewing techniques. Through role-playing, participants learn how to act in a face-to-face interview, including negotiating salaries, listening without interrupting, discussing job responsibilities and asking questions about the company they are hoping to join.
Mentors are assigned to participants who help them make career choices based on their interests and aptitudes and find jobs that provide the kind of experience that they need to reach their goals. They think about how education and computer skills affect their job readiness and how their choices today affect career options and income in the future.
