In the Self-Discovery module, participants think about what they like to do and set both short and long-term goals to accomplish what they want in life. Then the group looks at what can be done right away– including improving their academic performance--to turn these dreams into reality.
This module examines advocating for one’s needs and emphasizes learning and academic work as vital steps to reaching one’s vision. Participants also learn about their individual learning styles and ways of processing information, and how to put that into action to become a successful student. Instructors accentuate the positive and highlight the need for improvements rather than faults, thus setting an example for participants as they affirm their strengths and the unique talents of others in the class.
Instructors further help participants build confidence, self-control and discipline in reaching their goals. Participants’ goals become part of their personal portfolios and are revisited throughout the program.
