Urban Tech's job training curriculum focuses on the specific skills that employers demand in today's workplace. Each module contains detailed exercises that enable the participant to learn skills using real-world skills applications, i.e. drafting business letters in Word Processing, and includes a Checking Your Skills component so participants can evaluate their own progress.
Each center will be certified to offer training in four courses. Each course is 15 hours long and is typically offered in five three-hour sessions.
Computer Fundamentals
This course provides paricipants with step-by-step instruction in basic computer usage. Participants acquire the computer skills necessary to operate in the Windows environment using the mouse and the keyboard. They become familiar with a broad range of computer functions, such as creating and copying files, and learn how to use the Windows programs such as - Word Pad, Paint, and the Calculator. Word Processing
This beginners level course teaches participants computer skills necessary to use a Word Processing program to create documents such as letters, resumes, and flyers. They create visually appealing documents using the following techniques: clip art, Word Art, bullets, lines and boxes; multiple fonts and tables.
Using the Internet
This course introduces participants to the vast world of the Internet. Participants acquire useful skills for effective email account management and Internet research. They become familiar with online job search and posting resumes in a job bank web site. Participants learn how to compress and decompress files, download programs from the Web. This curriculum contains six modules.
Power Point
Learning to make effective presentations, participants design slide shows for conferences, web page banners and organizational charts. Participants also present visual reports of new ideas, current projects and financial plans for small businesses and social service agencies.
